Mary Speare 1802-1871

Mary is the oldest child of Richard Speare & Mary Ward.  Mary was baptised in Inwardleigh, Devon on 17th January 1802.  Mary was married to Joseph Roberts a farmer in Whitestone, Devon.

Mary & Joseph appear on the 1841 census in Whitestone with son Joseph & daughter Mary Ann. On the same census page are Mary's sister Grace Speare now married to John Gidley & Mary's brother Richard Speare now married to Anne Joslin.

10 Years later in 1851 Joseph & Mary Roberts are at East Rowhorn Farm.  Joseph is a farmer of 110 acres employing 6 labourers.  the 2 children Joseph & Mary Ann are still living at home.  Charles Gidley son of Mary's sister Grace is also working on the farm.

Another 10 years later in 1861 Joseph & Mary are still living at East Rowhorn Farm this time living next to Marys sister Eliza & her husband George Finnimore and Mary's mother Mary Speare.

Joseph & Mary do not appear on another census.  I believe Mary died in the 1st Qtr of 1871.

Children of Joseph & Mary Roberts

In the 1871 Census image Joseph Roberts the son was married to Agnes with 2 children Laura & Effie they were still living at East Rowhorn Farm which was now 217 Acres in size.  Joseph's Aunt & Uncle George & Eliza Finnimore were living in the neighbouring cottage.

Mary Anne Roberts daughter of Joseph & Mary was living in Little Log Cottage, Upton Pyne at the time of the 1871 Census.  She is shown as a "Lady" and had a general servant.  She is living close to her Uncle Daniel Speare and his family.
