John Speare  1818 - 1847

John Speare was the 7th child of Richard Speare & Mary Ward. He was baptised in Inwardleigh on 4th October 1818.

At the time of the 1841 Census John was living at Lower Ley Farm with her parents Richard & Mary and brothers Samuel, Daniel & Emanuel also sister Eliza.

John Speare was married to Mary Perkins on 4th July 1841 in Upton Pyne, Devon.  The witnesses at the wedding were John's brother Daniel Speare & Mary's sister Harriet who were later to marry.

 John & Mary had 4 children Richard, William, John & John only Richard was to be married.  William & the first John died as infants and the 2nd John died in his youth.

John Speare husband of Mary passed away in October 1847 and was buried 31st October 1847 in Upton Pyne.  His wife Mary then married John Hoare on 16th January 1849.  Her brother in law Daniel Speare was one of the witnesses at the wedding.

In 1851 Richard Speare son of John & Mary was living with his Grandparents William & Sarah Perkins in Upton Pyne.

John Hoare passed away on 21st February 1875 at Upton Pyne & Mary on the 16th April 1883 also in Upton Pyne.  Mary was buried in Upton Pyne on 22nd April 1883

Next generation

Richard Speare son of John Speare & Mary Hoare was born on 28th February 1842 in Upton Pyne, Devon.  He was baptised in the village on 13th March 1842.  Richard was married to Susanna Carter daughter of John & Grace Carter on 7th December 1873 in East Teignmouth, Devon.   Susanna was born 24th May 1836 in Tiverton.

Richard & Susan were living in Globe Lane, Teignmouth, Devon at the time of the 1861 census.  Richard was working as a Groom.

10 Years later in 1871 the family are still in Teignmouth, Devon.  They are now living in Dawlish Street.

In 1881 Richard & Susan are living at 3 Portobello Cottages, St Mary Church, Devon now just with their youngest son Richard John Speare.  Richard is working as a Gardener.

In 1891 Richard & Susan are living at Osborne Gardens, Tormoham, Torquay, Devon.  Richard is still working as a Gardener and his son Richard John Speare is living with them working as a Painter.

Richard Speare passed away on 27th May 1895 at 4 Lower Wellesley Road, Torquay, Devon.  Susan lived another 14 years and died on 29th September 1909 in Devon.  

All four of their children were married.  Eliza Carter married George Tarr in 1875 in Devon.   George Walter Speare married Sarah Ann Mitch on 25th February 1883 in Torquay, Devon he relocated to Southampton, Ontario, Canada.  Harry Speare was married to Elizabeth Collings on 16th April 1882.  Richard John Speare married Mary Ellen Taylor on 25th March 1893.
