Lawrence of Tacoma, Washington which shows that Jessie died after 1947 probably in Washington. 16. WALTER HENRY5 SPEARE (HARRIET4 PERKINS, WILLIAM3, MARY2 JOLLIFFE, ROBERT1) was born 17 November 1868 in Upton Pyne, Exter, Devonshire, England, and died 1 March 1947 in Hamilton Ontario, Canada. He married (1) LUCY HOWARD Abt. 1882 in Cardiff, Wales, daughter of JOSEPH HOWARD and MARY. She was born Abt. 1868 in Wales, and died Abt. February 1898 in Cardiff, Wales. He married (2) ALICE SCOURSE Abt. 1898 in Cardiff Wales, daughter of JIM SCOURSE and ELIZABETH WILSON. She was born 26 April 1876 in Cardiff, Glamorgan, Wales, and died 31 May 1941 in Hamilton Ontario, Canada.

Notes for WALTER HENRY SPEARE:

Walter was married first to Lucy Howard. They had two children. Lucy died either giving birth or shortly after the birth of their third child, another girl named Lucy. Walter met and married Alice Sourse in 1898. Walter was in the Army in the Boer War and in the First World War. In 1920 in early September, Walter, his second wife, Alice, and all their children and their families immigrated to Canada. They set sail from Liverpool, England, on the 4th of September 1920, on the ship the Megantic, and reached the port of Quebec on September 11, 1920. On the trip many of the children were seasick.

On the trip here, they met up with Wilfred Reese and his family who were also immigrating to Canada. That friendship remained for many years.

Upon their arrival in Hamilton, they went first to the Caroline St. Mission, and then they went to Wesley United Church. The Speare family had trouble finding a place to live in. No one wanted to rent a house to someone who had so many children. Walter had been a master baker in Cardiff and had sold his business when they decided to move to Canada. They had to use the money they had from selling their bakery business in Cardiff to purchase a home to live in. Instead of setting up a new bakery in Hamilton, they bought a semi-detached house at 12 Severn St. in Hamilton, a house where the youngest daughter lives in even now in the year 2002. Walter then went to work as a master baker at Hill's Bakery.

Notes for LUCY HOWARD:

Lucy Howard was the first wife of Walter Henry Speare. Her parents were farmers and, according to family members, her parents lived in Summerhouse Castle just outside of Cardiff, Wales. Like her husband Walter, Lucy was born in the Devon area of England and had immigrated to Wales previous to her marriage. Lucy died about the same time as the birth of their third child, a daughter called Lucy.

Notes for ALICE SCOURSE:

Alice was the housekeeper for Lucy and Walter Speare. When the Boer War began, Walter married Alice so that she could look after his children while he was away in the war. Prior to Alice's marriage and coming to Canada, Alice's mother Elizabeth Scourse nee Wilson married a second time to George Hunter. Elizabeth and George had a son they named Sydney Hunter. Sydney immigrated first to Canada along with Walter Speare Jr. to see if Canada was a suitable place for the rest of the family. Their findings altered the course of the history of the Walter Henry Speare family.

Ivy was the first born child of William and Ellen Davenport. At the time of her birth she weighed only 3 1/2 pounds and not expected to live. She was kept on the open oven door wrapped snuggly while the embers of the fire kept her warm the first few days. On Ivy's birth certificate dated September 7,1905, it prints her last name as Devenport, but Ivy always spelled her name as Davenport, even on her marriage certificate. Ivy was an accomplished sewer and worked at the True Knit and the Mercury Knitting Mills before having her family. She was married for 18 years before she had her first child. She had her second child almost two years later at the age of 39. Ivy was a stay at home Mum, but following the death of Alf, in 1964, she found herself another job as Housemother working nights at the nurses residence at the Henderson Hospital. She remained there until she retired at the age of 65. Then she became involved with the seniors card clubs, playing euchre and travelling with them. She lived on her own taking care of her own needs until a TIA at the age of 80 forced her to decide to sell her house and move in with her daughter in Vinemount. For her 91st birthday she had a pacemaker installed. She kept perky until she died of heart failure at the Stoney Creek Life Care Centre were she live from February 6, 1998 until July 16, 1999.

17. EDWIN5 PERKINS (JOHN4, JOHN3, MARY2 JOLLIFFE, ROBERT1) was born 1835 in Upton Pyne, Devon, England. He married CAROLINE SPARK 21 October 1852 in Registry Office, Exeter, Devon, England, daughter of JAMES SPARK. She was born Abt. 1825.

Notes for EDWIN PERKINS:

Edwin Perkins was a Porter. Both he and Caroline were living in the St Davids Hill area of Exeter when they were married. He later became a Cab Proprietor when the family mowed to Summerland St Plymouth, St Andrews. There are many unexplained questions about Edwin. Why did he marry a woman at least 10 years older than himself? The marriage certificate gives his age as 19 years but he was more than likely 17 years old. There may have been some concern in his family about the union. This may explain why he married in the Registry Office. The witnesses on check seem unconnected and may literally have been recruited off the street. Edwin's father is described as a Shoemaker but on the 1851 Census for Devon he was a Rail Labourer, a new occupation at this time because the railway had only reached Exeter in 1844. Interestingly, Edwin's grandfather was a Shoemaker, there being an entry in the Whites 1850 directory for Upton Pyne.

The entry in the 1861 Census for Edwin Perkins and family indicates that he was a Cab Proprietor with two cabs. There are entries in the Plymouth Commercial Trade Directories for 1864 and 1888 having the address 2 Summerland Place, Plymouth.

iii. LAURA PERKINS, b. 1858, Plymouth, Devon, England.

iv. EDWIN ERNEST PERKINS, b. 26 April 1859, St. Andrews, Plymouth, Devon, England; m. (1) MARY JANE COLLICOTT, 22 June 1879, Registry Office, Plymouth, Devon, England; b. 1859, Knackersknowle, Devon, England; m. (2) MARY EMMA ANDREWS, 21 August 1887, Hooe, Plymouth, Devon, England; b. 25 July 1870, Plympton, St Mary, Hooe, Plymstock, Devon, England.

Notes for EDWIN ERNEST PERKINS:

Edwin Perkins was, like his father, a Cab Proprietor, living in the Summerland Street area of St. Andrews. Other Perkins family members were also in the Handsome Cab business. By 1891, Edwin and his family and also brother Frank and his family were all living at 7 Summerland Street with their parents. On Edwin's son's, George Edwin Perkins, marriage certificate to Paulina Stapleton, Edwin Ernest Perkins' occupation was listed as Jobmaster. A Jobmaster supplied Carriages, Horses and drivers for hire. Entries in the Plymouth Trade directories for 1888 and 1906, confirm this occupation.

Notes for MARY JANE COLLICOTT:

Before her marriage Mary Collicott lived at Edgumbe Place, Plymouth, Devon, England. Her deceased father, Willam Collicott, was previously a labourer at the H. M. Dockyard.

Marriage Notes for EDWIN PERKINS and MARY COLLICOTT:

Witnesses to Edwin Perkins' first marriage to Mary Collicott were John and Louisa Arscott. Louisa and John were also residents at 7 Summerland Street in Plymouth. John was a cab driver and Louisa was a domestic servant.

Notes for MARY EMMA ANDREWS:

Keith Perkins remembers staying with his grandmother at about the age of 3 or 4 (1924-1925) in Plymouth at 11 Buckland Street and being disturbed by late night goings on at the Continental Hotel on Milbury Road. Mary is believed to have lived in and apartment at this address with a man called Jack who was not believed to have been a member of the Perkins Family. Keith also remembers going to the fish market and eating shrimps with George Perkins, his grandfather.

v. KATE PERKINS, b. 1861, Plymouth, Devon, England.

vi. FRANK VICKERY PERKINS, b. 1865; m. BEULAH BAILEY INCH, June 1887, Plymouth, Devon, England; b. 1868, Plymouth, Devon, England.

Notes for FRANK VICKERY PERKINS:

Frank's second name Vickory is interesting and unusual and no doubt originates from an old family name. In the GRO the name appears as Velven and so it may not be the correct spelling of the name.

Notes for BEULAH BAILEY INCH:

Beulah Bailey Inch was the step-daughter of George Clark, who was a Plymouth Coach Operator and Employer. Although there were several members of the Inch family residing in Devon, her earlier background is unknown at this time.
